An Alabama Home Builders license is required for any residential project that exceeds $10,000 or more in value. All electrical, plumbing, and hvac contractors, administrators, and journeymen are also required to be licensed. The state of Alabama requires any general contractor working on a commercial or industrial project costing $50,000 or more to get a license. If you're the general contractor on a residential project that costs $10,000 or more, you need a license. The Alabama Business Law Exam is required for licensure as a General Contractor. General contractors must submit verification of 3 years experience and a financial statement with the completed application. Limits are based on the applicants net worth or working capital. After the application is approved, the State Licensing Board will notify you of a testing date. Licensing fees may differ according to each classification. It will cost you $300 to file an initial application for a Prime Contractor license. The Business and Law exam will cost $96. The Subcontractor application will cost $150.

Business and Law exam has 50 questions and an 2-hour time limit. All applicants must score at least 70% in order to pass. The Alabama Building Contractor (Commercial) Exam has 115 questions and a time limit of 330 minutes. Must get at least 81 questions correct to pass. The Alabama General Contractor Under 4 Stories Exam has 90 questions and a time limit of 230 minutes. 70% is required to pass. Alabama Contractors License Reciprocity

 

contractors license reciprocityThe State of Alabama Licensing Board has reciprocity with Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee. Any applicant holding a license in good standing in a comparable classification in another state recognized by the respective agency as a reciprocity state may have the trade portion of the examination waived upon written certification from that state in which the applicant is licensed. The proposed qualified individual for the applicant shall be the same individual who is duly qualified for the license currently issued to the applicant by the reciprocal state licensing board. Applicants must comply with all other Alabama licensing requirements. The business law portion of the examination shall not be waived. Application must be in this office for 30 days before receiving license through reciprocity. More info here.
