get florida contractors licenseA Building Contractor is one whose services are limited to the construction of commercial buildings and single dwelling or multiple dwelling residential buildings. These buildings cannot exceed 3 stories in height. A building contractor may also construct the accessory use structures in connection with these buildings. An accessory use structure would be a garage, guesthouse, garden shed, or other outbuilding. This license also allows remodeling, repair, or improvements of any building – If the services do not affect the structural elements of the building.

You must also meet one of the following requirements: Four year construction-related degree from an accredited college (equivalent to three years experience) and one year proven related experience. One year of experience as a foreman and not less than three years of credits for any accredited college-level courses. One year experience as a workman, one year proven experience as a foreman, and two years of credits for any accredited college level courses. Two years experience as a workman, one year experience as a foreman, and one year of credits for any accredited college level courses. Four years experience as a workman or foreman of which at least one year must have been as a foreman.

 

Florida Building Contractors Fees

 

contractors license feesIf you are applying between June 4th of an even year and August 31st of an odd year, the license will be $409. If you are applying between September 1st of an odd year and June 3rd of an even year, the license will cost $309. If you paid $354 and submitted your examination application before February 11, 2003, your fee will be $209 and $109 respectively. Applicants are also required to provide a credit report and financial statement that is no more than 12 months old. A net worth of $2,500 - $20,000 (depending on classification) is required. The minimum general liability insurance that is required for licensure is $300,000 for bodily injury and $50,000 for property damage.

 

Florida Building Contractors Exam Details

 

contractor exam detailed informationApplicants must submit an application and exam fee to become registered to take the exam. The testing company must receive completed applications and appropriate fees no later than 30 days prior to the next scheduled exam date. Florida requires that all contractors pass Business and Finance portion of their exam. This exam must be taken in addition to the contractors related trade exam. You will be scheduled for the examination date and site that you selected on your application. There are 3 parts to the exam: the Business Finance portion is 6.5 hrs, the General Construction Contract Administration portion is 4.5 hrs, and the General Construction Project Management portion is 4.5 hrs. A score of at least 70% is required to pass the exams. Exams are held 6 times per year in February, April, June, August, October, and December. Test locations are in Orlando, Tallahassee, and Miami. Florida Contractors License Reciprocity

 

contractors license reciprocityFlorida has no reciprocity agreements. Out-of-state contractors are required to pass the Florida examination for certification. More info here. There is a provision for certification by endorsement; however, it requires that the applicant demonstrate that his/her out-of-state license was issued based upon an examination that is substantially equivalent to Florida's examination.
