A State Licensing requirements exist for Public, Commercial, and Single-Family Residential construction projects. Commercial projects with a value of $50,000 or more must be licensed commercial contractors when the property is to be sued for commercial purposes. All residential construction or home improvements exceeding $75,000 must be performed by a licensed residential building contactor. Pre-Approval is required for all classifications before testing. There are no specific experience requirements in Louisiana. However financial requirements do exist: The applicant must provide the board with a financial statement, current and within 12 months of the date of filing, prepared by an auditor and signed before a notary public, proving the current assets of the applicant, which will be used by the board to determine financial responsibility of the applicant to perform in the State of Louisiana. Such assets shall include a net worth of at least $10,000. The Board requires you to pass two exams in order to get a contractors license. The contractors exam has a business and law section and a trade section. The Louisiana Contractors Licensing Board gives the exam. The Contractors Exam for trade section has 115 multiple-choice, equally weighted questions with a 5-1/2-hour time limit. The same is true for the Business and Law Exam. 70% of the questions must be answered correctly for a passing score.
