Mississippi General Contractors License Information

Every Classification is Mississippi requires pre-approval. All applicants must submit a completed application to the State Licensing Board to obtain approval before testing. Mississippi has no minimum experience requirements. However, they do expect applicants to have experience in the area(s) they wish to be licensed and be able to document it on their application. Applicants must also submit a financial statement that is less than 12 months old showing net worth that has been reviewed by a CPA. Major classifications must have a net worth of at least $50,000. (Major classifications are Building, Highway, Street and Bridges, Heavy Construction, Electrical, Mechanical, Municipal and Public Works.) A Building Construction License is required in Mississippi for commercial projects that exceed over $50,000 in value. A licensed building contractor in Mississippi can perform general aspects of construction on any commercial, residential or industrial structure. Applicants are required to submit a CPA reviewed financial statement. This statement must document a net worth of at least $50,000. Applicants will have to pass two exams: law and business exam and their trade. Law and Business exam has 50 questions and an 2-hour time limit. A 70% is required to pass the exam. The general contractors exam on the other hand has 80 questions and an 3-hour time limit. A 70% is required to pass the exam.
