New Mexico General Contractors License Information
New Mexico requires that you also pass the standard business law exam
A contractors license is required in New Mexico prior to bidding on any project. To become a licensed contractor, candidates are required to pass two examinations: business and law and their trade. Applications for licensure can obtained from the New Mexico Construction Industries Division. Please note that pre-approval is required through the board before sitting for an examination. Applicants qualifying agent must provide proof of required experience (2-4 years depending on classification). The applicant must also submit a certificate of competence. The activities that are considered to be contracting in New Mexico are defined in the Construction Industries Licensing Act. The New Mexico General Building Contractor exam has 100 questions and a time limit of 300 minutes. A 75% is required to pass. Topics on the exam include sitework, concrete, masonry; carpentry; doors and windows; metals; drywall and finishes; thermal and moisture protection; general code; plan reading and estimating; and OSHA safety. The fee for the exam is $30 and pre-approval is required from the board before sitting for the exam. The New Mexico Business and Law Exam has 50 questions and a time limit of 125 minutes. A 75% is required to pass. Topics on the exam include licensing requirements, estimating and bidding, business organization and financial management, tax laws, labor laws, project management and lien law, contractors, risk management, and environment and safety.
