South Carolina General Contractors License Information
South Carolina requires that you also pass the standard business law exam
Every aspect of Construction, Electrical, Plumbing and Mechanical Contracting in South Carolina is regulated at the State Level. Residential classifications are required to pass a Business Law examination in addition to a trade exam and may obtain licensing information from the Residential Builders Commission in Columbia, SC. Pre-Approval for Residential Classifications is required. General and Mechanical classifications are required to pass a Business Law examination in addition to a trade exam and may obtain licensing information from the South Carolina Contractor's Licensing Board in Columbia, SC. The first step in the licensing process is to pass the exams. A completed application should then be submitted to the state licensing board with documentation of your experience, financial information and your passing test scores. Within the past five years, contractor must show two years of actual work experience as a full-time employee in the desired classification. Only commercial experience is accepted. All licenses that fall under the category of General Contractor are divided in five financial categories based on net worth: Group 1 – Allows for jobs of $17,500 or less, applicants must submit a self-prepared financial statement showing a net worth of at least $3,500. Group 2 – Allows for jobs of $30,000 or less, applicants must submit a self-prepared financial statement showing a net worth of at least $6,000. Group 3 – Allows for jobs of $50,000 or less, applicants must submit a financial statement that has been compiled and reviewed by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $10,000. Group 4 – Allows for jobs of $125,000 or less, applicants must submit a financial statement that has been compiled and reviewed by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $25,000. Group 5 – There are no financial limits on the size of job allowed, applicants must submit an audited financial statement that has been prepared by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $100,000. You must furnish proof of financial responsibility on your application. All applicants will have to pass two exams; their trade and a business and law exam. Law and Business has 50 questions and a time limit of 2 hours. A score of 70% (35 questions correct) is needed to pass. Commercial Building contractor exam has 80-115 questions and a time limit of 4-6 hours. A score of 70% is needed to pass. Visit the South Carolina Contractor's Licensing Board for more info.
