West Virginia General Contractors License Information
West Virginia requires that you also pass the standard business law exam
A contractors license is required in West Virginia for any aspect of construction where the project is valued over $1,000. Any electrical performed for compensation must be by a licensed electrician. To become a licensed contractor, candidates are required to pass two examinations: business and law and the trade. All types of contractors are required to carry Workers Compensation Insurance and Unemployment Insurance. Applicants who have NOT been actively and actually engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years must obtain a Wage Bond covering all employee salaries for four weeks at full production. Exceptions to the Wage Bond requirement are contractors that are only performing Residential work and those who have been actively engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years. You have to pass a business and law exam and a trade exam to get a license. For law and business exam there are 50 questions and an 2 hour time limit. A 70% is required to pass the exam. The exam fee is $42. Topics on the exam include business organization, licensing, estimating and bidding, contracts, project management, risk management, safety, labor law, financial management, tax law, and lien law. For general building contractors exam, there are 80 questions and an 3 hour time limit. A 70% is required to pass the exam. The exam fee is $42. Exam content include: plan reading and estimating, sitework, steel, concrete, masonry, carpentry, roofing, doors, windows and stairs, interior finish, exterior finish, safety.
